Seriously, you all make this hands down the best car forum on the web. I don't know how we all do it, but the respect for each other on here is truly inspiring sometimes. It becomes so glaringly obvious how good we have it here when you try to talk cars elsewhere.
It's not that I really care what some dicknose with plastidipped wheels thinks about me, it's just that I see it constantly on that Dart group and I don't understand how people who are enthusiastic about the same vehicles can be such fucking assholes to eachother. It's him and a few others who always seem to stir shit. With this guy it just seems to be his attitude. On another post where someone was showing off their new side exit exhaust, a girl commented asking what the op did. This guy replies to her "exhaust. Don't you see the picture?" Isn't the point to get more people interested in the car and diacussing it and enjoying it? Not pushing them away because some owners think they're superior.

You could have replied "and also fail to repair OR properly diagnose them for about 5 months, then wait for the right part for another 6, before screwing up that part trying to install it. After all, you are a Chrysler tech."
NO, I'm totally not speaking from a horrible experience that actually was a big part of why I sold my Dart....

It's respectful, as long as you don't go to the FP. That's where the shit heads with plasti-dip wheels hang out.

Its the reason that I feel my time is well invested here, its the only social network (outside of having a real life) worth doing so. Thanks all for being awesome.

I have tons of respect for the techs I work with, and not a whole lot for Chrysler's engineers. Different dealerships will always do different quality work, so I wont defend the one you went to, but it is a new car for us with an essentially alien powertrain.
Their engineering departments though...

Amen bro. Oppo feels very much like an extension of real life most of the time, and not a community with a bunch of assholes trying too hard to put each other down
![]() 07/31/2014 at 01:31 |

Exactly, I can come here and just talk about cars, any kind and anythimg about them, ask any question, be it personal or automotive, share pictures of my pets, ramble drunkenly when I get home from a night out, and not a single person on here will put you down or make you feel like you don't belong in any way. We all get it, that this is a diverse hobby and we can all learn something from each other. Like I said, the respect shown here is inspiring. It'd be great if it translated to the real world.

Oh no doubt about that, but the FP gets cross posted like all the gawker sites ao you get those sort of commenters. Oppo is also sort of hidden, so the FP attracts more casual posters.
I used to post on Motor Trend's forums and the infighting there between import vs domestic fans, or Ford vs Chevy, or whatever could just get ridiculous. That doesn't happen here. We all love cars and respect each other's interests.

I really was just thinking this guy's douchey statement needed an equally douchey response, but I did have such an experience, although I chalk it up mainly to the shittiness of the local Chrysler group dealer. Which is the only one within an hour's reach in any direction, except for one, which they own as well. I deal with those guys in terms of parts every single day for work and they are always cool, but when I took my own car in there it was a total cluster.

Very true. I made the mistake of joining a "show your car" type community on Facebook. Last I heard from those guys, there was a 13 year old from Palestina going at it with a guy from Israel. There were insults, racial slurs, religious slurs, death threats, the works.

That's why we talk here and not on the FP... //hehe
![]() 07/31/2014 at 01:38 |

Agreed. I've noticed the mods are pretty good at getting rid of dickhead comments around here, and if they don't we've always got hotdog gifs to post to the douchebags.

Alot of people unfortunately seem to like a particular brand more than they like cars in general.
Fortunately, Most people here seem to like cars in general. Of course, people tend to stick with certain brands because that's what they know how to work on, but they don't dismiss everything else. Even though kinja sucks, this is the reason why I keep logging on to Oppo.

I'm not sure what it is with this Dart group. Most people are fine and just want to talk about the cars, but some have to be dicks and argue over nothing. Literally, every arguement on there is over nothing, just one guy feeling the need to be "right". Instead of being respectful of those who may not have as much technical knowledge, they'll just dismiss them and make them look stupid. That's not how you build a community that people want to be part of.

Amen to that, I almoat always regret it when I post there. Today was nice though, I got a shit ton of recommends.

I'm part of classicoldsmobile.com — they can be really condescending if you ask a question about anyting technical. They also get really pissed if you ask a question that has been answered before.
It's a great resource, but they aren't open to too much discussion.
I don't understand it; you shouldn't treat people like shit if they share a similar interest with you.

We actually get alot of business from customers of other dealers. Just by being better people, being honest, not intentionally fucking people. There ate only 5 techs in my shop, we're all basically barely getting by, but we try to always do the right thing and not just take people's money or dick around fixing their cars. If a car is in our shop for an extended period of time it's because the car is kicking the tech's ass (which really does happen, sometimes cars are just massive pieces of uncooperative shit that just want to see the world burn) or because we get swamped with work. But that's just us.
As I said earlier in that facebook conversation (it was originally about a different guy's tranny service light coming on) I dont want to see anyone have a bad experience with our products or service, and I'm just an underpaid detailer.

It's just so rarely ever needed outaide of the occasional FP douchebag, but even then it's impossible to go through alof of the FP comments, because Kinja.

Tis a good outlook to have. Wish more dealers were that way. That's why I happily drive an hour and a half to the Fiat dealer for any little thing, because they are fantastic.

I do not miss the political debates on Motor Trend. Like a fool, I participated in all the drama back then. We fought about anything and everything. Camaro vs Mustang, Toyota vs GM, the Detroit 3 vs the Japanese 3, mainstream vs luxury, but the worst were when they got into gay rights, religion, abortion, Republican vs Democrat, etc. That sort of stuff doesn't come up here, thankfully, but that's not even the issue in my Dart groups and forums. It's just a bad attitude.
I feel like I belong here, like we all belong, despite our personal and automotive differences. We all come together around a common passion for automobiles, regardless of what they are.

Why you talking' shit about plasti dip? What did those spray cans ever do to you?
![]() 07/31/2014 at 02:04 |

Not all of them, I've been here with my rattle cans for years.
![]() 07/31/2014 at 02:12 |

I'll be honest, I think they always come out awful. At least as far as I've seen. I get that it's like paint but far more affordable and easier to work with, but alot of these Facebook plastidippers(these Dart people are craaaazzzzyyyy about dipping things. Dip all the things!) act like it looks as good as paint.
Plus I don't like the whole brightly colored contrasting wheels trend. And this guy has a slammed black Dart on red dipped stock wheels.
![]() 07/31/2014 at 02:12 |

Yeah... and in the event that those delicate issues do show up, we're mature enough to respect differences and not pick grudges because of them. Oppo really is an awesome place!
![]() 07/31/2014 at 02:18 |

And that's my point. That's how some of these guys are and some of the people at dodge-dart.org. We share a passion for the same car, why are you treating me like less of a human?
![]() 07/31/2014 at 02:28 |

I have enough respect for everyone that I'd rather bite my tongue on a political topic that im passionate about than get into a spat with any of you.

I'm not an Oppo regular contributor (mostly 'cause I don't know shit), but I can tell there's a *culture* here that a new person can't ignore. Strong cultures can't be ignored by most people, but the ones that can are trolls and get dealt with (by the culture itself.)
That's why I always grew new groups slowly at first, establishing the culture with a few and then adding the alt-culture person to the group, who conformed because the others were already operating the way they were. A whole lot of managers end up managing a cross of alt-culture and their-culture because they don't understand this mechanism.
Oppo is established. It has a culture. Someone paid attention to its infancy and I'm appreciative of that. It's why I look at "cultural mechanisms" for everything I do.

Don't hate on engineers until you deal with the bullshit that stands in the way of making a good product. Automotive engineers make the best out of the least money out of anybody. I am sick of people saying something bad because of engineers when they have no idea what goes into engineering a car. Sure, dumb mistakes are made, but most of the time it's incredible what they manage to get done despite the restrictions and roadblocks put in the way of making a car.

You're not the only one. I don't know squat either, but it is fun to jump in. Plus, I tend to ask the questions no one else asks, that only a beginner wouldn't know. They respond in a helpful way, and are very informative.

It's an attribute of the culture here that I also appreciate to a high degree.
